Information and Tips for Go Green
Going green is a great way to help the environment. If each person adopts a few simple lifestyle changes, the world’s natural resources can be conserved. Follow these quick and simple tips to reduce your carbon and save some money in the process.
1. Rely less on paper towels – it may seem much easier to rip off a paper towel every time you wash your hands or have a small spill. Instead, save the paper towels for big messes and use a regular towel to dry your hands every time you wash. To clean counters, use a sponge or a small dish towel that you can wash and reuse. Save the paper towels for really messy jobs, like syrup, or for when you clean the toilet or wipe up raw meat juices.
2. Conserve Water- there are many ways to save water. First, do not water your lawn in the afternoon. Wait until evening and only water if there is no rain in the weather forecast. Turn off the water as you brush your teeth. Take only 8-10 minute showers, and turn off the water as your shampoo, shave and lather up. Do not rinse dishes too much before placing them in the dishwasher unless your dishwasher does not work that well. For most newer models, you only need to scrape off large food particles. Do not run a washing machine cycle unless you have enough clothes for a full load.
3. Save gas- carpool to work and school, or if you live close enough, walk or ride your bike. Not only will you save money on gas and car maintenance, you will get your daily exercise this way. Public transportation is also a great idea because not only will you save money, you can use the commute to catch up on reading, do other tasks to prepare for the work day or just relax and enjoy your morning coffee without worrying about spilling or multitasking.
4. Recycle- keep a separate smaller garbage can or bin beside your kitchen trash to toss empty bottles, cans and cartons. Simply take these out with your regular trash and place in a recycle bin.
